Why We Began Helping Children with Cancer and their families
After the loss of their 5-year-old son, Keaton, on February 20, 1998 to a deadly childhood cancer known as neuroblastoma (cancer of the nervous system), Robyn and Kyle Raphael, together, with family and community support, founded the Memorial as a direct response to the lack of resources available to Northern California families battling childhood cancer.
Celebrating ten-years, The Keaton Raphael Memorial has grown into a regional voice for children with cancer and their families by coining the phrase, “Save a Child, Invest in a Cure!”
“As a family who has experienced ‘the childhood cancer journey,’ we recognize that our families need several types of support and we are committed to guiding them through their journey with hope,” said Robyn Raphael, Founder and CEO.
How we Invest in Children with Cancer and their families
The Keaton Raphael Memorial (KRM) is a 501C3 organization whose mission is to support children with cancer and their families by providing emotional, educational and financial support, while increasing awareness and funding research toward a cure.
KRM’s core philosophy is that families need support until a cure is found. KRM’s unique Family Grant Program has served more than 400 children and their families by providing “HOPE packages,” containing vital childhood cancer resource information, a financial contribution to the family along with gas, phone, grocery gift cards, custom “snuggle blankets,” journals, disposable cameras, photo albums and sibling support information. Family’s are contacted by our “Volunteer Outreach Team” and are linked to their support volunteer throughout their journey. Should a child’s journey end in loss, KRM’s compassionate gesture to the family is a custom handmade walnut “memory box” filled with bereavement resources for the entire family.
KRM has directed nearly One Million Dollars toward local and national research projects which directly benefit children with cancer.
As a local and national advocate, KRM has positively impacted social change and awareness of the childhood cancer issue by representing thousands of Ca families at our nation’s capital.
KRM’s volunteers are “the light in the beacon of HOPE”, and donate over 2,000 hours of service a year by participating in family outreach projects, events and programs.
